Four lessons I’ve learned in owning my own business

I’ve been my own boss for over a year now. Running this video business has been SO fun and SO full. I am so grateful.

Now that we all have more time on our bums, I’ve been thinking A LOT about what this business means to me and what I’ve learned. SO, here are four BIG takeaways from running my own business this past year.

1. Having a STRONG support system is VITAL.

This goes on both a personal AND business level because, let’s be honest-- hiccups are inevitable (helloooo, global pandemic?).

When you hit those challenges or just have those mental brain farts you can’t overcome, you can find yourself in a deeeep mental pit.

This is when you need someone else who knows you and your business to pull you out of the pit and give you perspective. For me, that has been Marc and his family. From the beginning they supported me and my vision, and even got me my first computer. You need those people in the highs of your business and those really hard lows.

2. Make time for your business goals!

Okay, let’s be real. We can all use the excuse of “I don’t have time for ____.” I’m sure you’ve heard this quote and you KNOW it’s true: “If it's important enough, you will make the time to make it happen.”

I’m leaning into that quote as I grow MY business. The truth is pretty straightforward: the more you put time and energy towards your idea/business, you'll naturally get better.

Yes, there’s the nitty gritty of contracts and technical stuff, but if your heart is in the right place, you’ll have the STAMINA to keep growing, ESPECIALLY when business is tough like it is now.

3. Invest in yourself and your business goals.

I have paid lots of money to be in business and creative classes, and it’s because I KNOW how valuable it is to my growth, and really for my clients. When I take online courses, I learn a gajillion new ways to improve my craft and help make a better product for my clients.

Investing in my own business assets has been a game-changer for me!

4. OWN your creative nature!

One of the biggest realizations I’ve had is that I am deeply creative. This isn’t just something I do, it represents who I AM. It has been such a GIFT in this season to allow myself to own and enjoy the creative process. I love painting, photoshoots, colors, and design work.

This is an integral part of who I am that allows me to say passionate about my work and helps me have a space to create outside of my business.

SO on that note, I would LOVE for you to check out my YouTube channel. (While you’re there, hit subscribe!) This is something I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t made the time for it. So now I’m listening to my OWN advice and putting my creative being into action.

Have a good one!

Rachel
